Discipline Policy

Discipline Policy

Our goal is to help each child develop a sense of self-control that allows him/her to make appropriate choices. We strive to provide a consistent approach to discipline, where children are aware of safety and behavioral limits and informed of consequences.

Teachers work hard to prevent unacceptable behaviors from occurring through the use of positive reinforcement and redirection, through encouraging children to express their needs by using their words, and by helping them make choices that respect the needs of others.

When a child does lose control of his/her behavior, s/he is given time and space to calm down before rejoining the group. During this time a teacher is available to talk and listen to the child, and provide comfort.

Teachers are careful to interact with children in a way that does not leave them feeling guilty, resentful, or of diminished self-esteem.

If any of the following incidents occur, we may contact you (or, if you are not available, someone from the emergency list) and ask you to come and pick up your child immediately:

— Your child bites and breaks the skin of another child.
— Your child chokes another child in an aggressive manner.
— Your child acts in a way that endangers the well being of others.

Snack/Lunch

Snack/Lunch

We provide a morning kosher snack for all children. The weekly snack menu is posted on the Parent Board. If your child stays for our extended care program, please pack a nutritious Kosher dairy lunch, afternoon snack and drink. Small amounts of food are preferable. No soda or candy, please!

We also provide afternoon snack when needed, or when cooking activities are planned.

Clothing

Clothing

Your child should come to school each day in clothing appropriate for indoor as well as outdoor play. Children take part in many messy arts and crafts activities, so please keep in mind that clothing worn to school will inevitably become soiled. Parents are asked to keep a change of clothing (appropriate for the season) in their child's cubby. Label all clothing and personal articles to avoid confusion. Clothing depicting images such as Power Rangers, Ninja Turtles, etc., seem to provoke aggressive play. We ask that this type of clothing not be worn to school.

Materials From Home

Materials From Home

Children should not bring toys or other treasured objects to school. The destruction or loss of a special toy can add unnecessary tension to the school day. The exception to this rule is the child who may need a special object (blanket, stuffed animal) to make the transition from home to school. We welcome books (clearly labeled), toys and nature objects (leaves, flowers, shells, etc.) that can be shared with the class. Your child's teacher will explain his/her own policy regarding Circle Time sharing.

Birthdays

Birthdays

We celebrate birthdays at school and welcome you to join us during that time. If you would like to provide the kosher baking ingredients on your child's birthday, please discuss it in advance with your child's teacher. An optional gift to the class (such as a book or a toy) in honor of your child's birthday will be appreciated.

Field Trips

Field Trips

An important part of a young child's life is learning about the immediate community and the larger world surrounding it. We invite parents/community helpers to share their experience with the children. Parents will always be notified ahead of time if a field trip outside the school is planned.

Health

Health

We want to keep everyone at Sinai Nursery School as healthy as possible throughout the year. We rely on your thoughtful assessment of your child’s health before sending him/her to school. Please keep your child home from school when symptoms are just beginning (e.g. sore throat, runny nose, diarrhea, temperature, vomiting) and until s/he is no longer contagious. when your child returns, s/he should be able to participate in the full range of indoor/outdoor activities.

A child who becomes sick at school will be removed from the group and cared for until a parent or other designated adult can be contacted and pick up the child.

Absences

If your child will be absent due to illness or other concerns, please notify us as soon as possible.
